October 2 - World Farms Animals Day

Mahatma Gandhi is a legend. Today, Mahatma Gandhiji's principles and ideas is followed by millions of people in India and across the world. President Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr consider Mahatma Gandhi as their inspiration.

Mahatma Gandhi was born more than a century ago on October 2 in Gujarat, India. Mahatma Gandhi followed the principle of Nonviolence to free India from the British.

Mahatma Gandhi had great respect for animals. When he was a young adult, he took a vow not to consume cow's milk after he came to know the cruel procedure, Phooka or Doom Dev. Unfortunately, this cruel procedure still takes place in many countries. Mahatma Gandhi says, "The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." I'm sure Gandhi would advocate vegan diet (cruel-free diet) if he were alive today...

To honor Mahatma Gandhi, October 2 is celebrated as World Farms Animal Day. Thousands of people are motivated to go vegan on this day.

Sri Krishna Vilas in Cumming, Atlanta

If you are in Atlanta, and want to eat some good traditional south Indian food, then you should go to Sri Krishna Vilas in Cumming. Masala dosas, idli, rava doas, and vada is really good. In the afternoon, their Thali(variety of dishes including roti, rice, sambar, papad, side dishes and a sweet) is very popular.  I also like pooris, chole bhatara and vegetable biryani in this restaurant.

Sometimes, chats (Bombay street food) such as bhel puri, papdi chat and masala puri is also tasty and spicy here! Yesterday, I ate bhel puri, but it was so salty. I asked for sweet chutney, and it was sour! I guess this happens in most of the good restaurants...

5 Ways to Save Our Beautiful Earth

These days, everyone from kids to teenagers and adults to seniors, want to protect our Earth for us and our future generations. Our beautiful Earth is suffering from Global Warming. Deforestation, water pollution, air pollution , droughts,  and drying rivers is the result of Global Warming...

Today, everyone from Algeria to South Africa and Canada to Sweden , can protect our only Earth every day! Amitabh Bachchan - an icon in India, says that "Waste Managemet" should be taught in schools. Many celebrities in United States are going VEGAN to save our Mother Earth!

Wish You All A Very Happy Earth Day !

Here Are 5 Simple Ways to Protect Our Earth

1. Eat Vegan Food (Plant-based Food) : Growing fruits, vegetables, pulses, lentils and beans require less water compared with raising animals for meat. According to the United Nations report - Livestock's Long Shadow, farms raising chickens, pigs, and cows for meat and milk is the major cause for greenhouse gas emissions. In short, meat and dairy industries across the world is the major cause for global warming.

You can combat global warming by eating tasty and nutritious vegan food (plant-based food). Indian cuisine, Chinese cuisine, and Mediterranean cuisine is  awash with numerous vegan recipes. Here are some great vegan food blogs to explore. FatfreeVegan , Vegan Richa , Sharan India and Holy Cow

2. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle : Think before buying. Going vegan has helped me buy only "necessary items".  For my son's lunch-box, I always send a stainless steel spoon instead of disposable plastic spoon.  Read these article about reducing and recycling
Reducing and Reusing Basics

3. Don't Buy Animal Products :  Ban leather sofa, shoes and  fur jackets from your life. Leather industry is one of the causes for Cancer and other respiratory diseases. These days you can get vegan items - everything from non-leather jackets to shoes and Faux fur coats to Faux leather sofa in many countries like India and United States.

You can find numerous cruelty-free(vegan) cosmetic brands in North America and European countries. I often visit leapingbunny website to find everything from crulety-free lip gloss to shampoo . These days, many students have been using sophisticated computer softwares and digital models, instead of dissecting animals. With some planning, it is really easy to lead a cruel-free lifestyle in North America, Europe, and Australia . In India, visit Peta India  to find about cruel-free products(vegan products)

Many beautiful jewels and statues are made with Ivory(Elephant's tusk) and coral . Be careful while shopping. Here are few articles to know more about saving animals, environment and our Earth. Ocean conservation , Plastic pollution and Save Environment

4. Plant Trees and Grow Vegetables : Trees combat global warming by absorbing Carbon-dioxide. Growing vegetables and greens is also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Terrace gardening is now becoming popular in India. Here are some interesting websites Better India , Organic Gardening

5. Volunteer : Volunteering is a great way to show our love and gratitude to our community and  Mother Earth. My husband and I regularly volunteer in our local library and Chinmaya Mission. In United States, everyone I know volunteers in library, school, orphanges , and National Parks. In U.S , 339,626 volunteers collectively contributed over 8 million hours of volunteer service at  national parks last year !

If you wish to volunteer in India , please visit Swatch Bharat , Teach for India

Chinmaya Mission , Art Of Living , BAPS Swaminarayan Sastha are amazing organizations to volunteer in India , Canada, Australia, United States and many other countries.

Vegan Diet Can Cure Diabetes

Every day, the number of people suffering from Diabetes is increasing in India and across the world. India  is known as the "Capital of Diabetes".

Diet rich in carbohydrates(white rice) and sugar is the main cause of diabetes. During my recent visit to India, I noticed that so many vegetarians were suffering from Diabetes. It breaks my heart to say that  kids and young adults were suffering from Diabetes.

Two Great Reasons to go on Vegan Diet in 2017

1. Vegan Diet is Good for Health : Unprocessed vegan food brimming with fruits and vegetables is rich in antioxidants. Studies have shown that diet rich in vegetables and fruits has the capacity to keep everything from heart disease and diabetes and cancer to obesity at bay.

According to American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics , that appropriately planned vegetarian, including vegan, diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes.

Start you day with a bowl of fruits or green smoothy. Lentils, beans and vegetables such as brocolli and kale is loaded with proteins. So, try to consume veggie salads and lentil  soups for lunch. Indian cuisine and Mediterranean diet is awash with delicious and healthy plant-based recipes.

2. Vegan Diet is  Great for Environment : Studies have shown that vegan diet(plant-based diet ) has less impact on environment. Animal agriculture is causing water pollution and air pollution . Raising animals for meat consumes large amount of water compared to grow lentils and beans.

According to 2006 report by the United Nation Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) , raising animals for meat is the cause for greenhouse gases such as carbondioxide and methane. In short, animal industry and dairy farms across the world is causing global warming. Today, United Nations is urging people to eat less meat and consume less milk products. 2016 was declared as the International Year of Pulses by the the United Nations .  January 18, 2017 will be the second ever Global Pulse Day, a global event to celebrate pulses and continue the momentum of the International Year of Pulses.
